PALS 2019: 6 Facts About Congenital Heart Disease (CHD)

Fact #1: Congenital means existing at birth. CHD occurs when the heart or the blood vessels close to it do not normally develop before birth.

Fact #2: Congenital Heart Disease and Congenital Heart Defect are often used to refer to the same heart condition or ailment. But the latter is actually the more accurate term. CHD is actually a defect or abnormality and not a disease.

Fact #3: The exact cause or causes of congenital heart defect is unknown and is still being researched. The causes are currently being attributed to a combination of a several environmental and genetic factors.

Fact #4: A congenital heart defect (CHD) is often diagnosed in infancy. In other cases, even before birth. However, some defects are harder to detect than others. Some cases of CHD may not be diagnosed until much later in childhood, or even in as adults. pals

Fact #5: Not every case of congenital heart defect requires treatment. Some patients might only be required to visit a cardiologist and kept under observation. pals
